<p><b>Kankan</b> ist eine Stadt im Osten des <a href="Westafrika" title="Westafrika">westafrikanischen</a> Staates <a href="Guinea" title="Guinea">Guinea</a> mit etwa 191.000 Einwohnern.<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>
</p><p>Kankan ist die drittgrößte Stadt des Landes und liegt am Fluss <a href="Milo_(Niger)" title="Milo (Niger)">Milo</a>, einem Nebenfluss des <a href="Niger_(Fluss)" title="Niger (Fluss)">Niger</a>. Sie ist Hauptstadt der gleichnamigen <a href="Kankan_(Pr%C3%A4fektur)" title="Kankan (Präfektur)">Präfektur Kankan</a> und <a href="Region_Kankan" title="Region Kankan">Region Kankan</a>. Die Stadt ist für ihre Universität, ihre Religionsschüler, ihre Mangobäume und die traditionelle Tanzmusik <i>Mamaya</i> bekannt.<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Die Stadt wurde im 17. Jahrhundert von den <a href="Soninke" title="Soninke">Soninke</a> gegründet, wurde Hauptstadt des Baté-Reiches und bedeutendes Handelszentrum insbesondere für <a href="Kolanuss" title="Kolanuss">Kolanüsse</a>. 1879 wurde Kankan von <a href="Samory_Tour%C3%A9" title="Samory Touré">Samory Touré</a> besiegt und Teil des von ihm beherrschten <a href="Wassoulou-Reich" title="Wassoulou-Reich">Wassoulou-Reiches</a>. 1891 wurde der Ort im Rahmen der <a href="Franz%C3%B6sische_Feldz%C3%BCge_in_Westafrika" title="Französische Feldzüge in Westafrika">Französischen Feldzüge in Westafrika</a> von Truppen des Colonel <a href="Louis_Archinard" title="Louis Archinard">Louis Archinard</a> eingenommen und war fortan Teil des <a href="Franz%C3%B6sisch-Sudan" title="Französisch-Sudan">Französischen Sudan</a>, später von <a href="Franz%C3%B6sisch-Guinea" class="mw-redirect" title="Französisch-Guinea">Französisch-Guinea</a>. Nach der Unabhängigkeit wurde 1959 eine nationale Polizeischule auf dem Camp Soundiata gegründet, 1963 eine Universität und ein Institut für Reisforschung.<sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup>

<p>Kankan verfügt über einen Flughafen und ist ungefähr elf <a href="Autostunde" class="mw-redirect" title="Autostunde">Autostunden</a> von der Landeshauptstadt <a href="Conakry" title="Conakry">Conakry</a> entfernt, mit der es auch von 1915 bis zu ihrer Stilllegung um 1993 durch eine 661 Kilometer lange <a href="Schienenverkehr_in_Guinea" title="Schienenverkehr in Guinea">Eisenbahnlinie</a> verbunden war.
